San Carlo History

The San Carlo’s story begins on Valentine’s Day 1948, when two brothers Raymond and Rudy Melone opened the doors of a fine dining establishment they named after the oldest running opera house in Europe, Teatro Di San Carlo of their hometown Napoli, Italy. With their faithful wives, Jane & Ruth assisting them in the kitchen the two brother’s made The San Carlo a namesake in the then predominantly Italian Community of Lyndhurst, NJ. In 1967 upon graduating from the Culinary Institute of America following his completion at Notre Dame University, Raymond’s son Joseph Melone joined the family representing the second generation of Melone’s at the San Carlo. He was soon followed by his sister Justine Melone, whom along with their mother Jane continued to run the restaurant/banquet hall for three decades. It was during these years that The San Carlo underwent massive reconstructions, keeping up with the ever-changing times while still maintaining the values they held true, gourmet Italian/American cuisine with a splash of elegance and charm. Most recently Joe Melone’s daughter, Justine Giovanna Melone, upon her completion at Natural Gourmet Culinary Institute of NYC, joined the team, heading up the third generation of Melone’s to continue on with this legacy. The San Carlo is proudly run by the Melone family for over 75 years now, making it one of the oldest family owned and operated banquet halls in NJ.

The Melone family would like to thank its longtime loyal patrons for allowing us to host the numerous events within the community. We have cherished these past years of hosting your families’ birthday parties, christenings, graduations and weddings, just to name a few.
